How long should a Measuring Tape last you? Which parts are the quickest to get damaged? For how long should it continue to provide accurate results?
Remember, the accuracy of your Tape Measure depends on keeping its components in good condition. For example, even a slight bend on your end hook can adversely affect the accuracy of your product. Here we suggest some quick tips and tricks to prolong the life of your Measuring Tape, and to ensure that remains accurate and reliable!
Keep the tape blade free from dirt and debris. Clean your Measuring Tape’s blade regularly with a lightly oiled cloth. Dirt and dust can erode the protective coating on the tape blade, leaving tape blade graduations susceptible to wear and tear.
Wipe your steel tape blade if it’s damp or has been used in wet or rainy conditions. Moisture left on the tape blade will enter the spring motor and may cause it to get rusty.
Control the speed of the retraction of the tape blade, by guiding the tape blade with one hand. Uncontrolled retraction can damage the components of the tape and risk the safety of people around you. If using a fibreglass tape, take adequate care to rewind your tape smoothly and steadily. This will ensure the winding mechanism remains intact.
The sliding of the hook helps with accuracy in inside and outside measurements and should not be tampered with.
This may sound obvious, but it is important to safeguard your Measuring Tape from any unnecessary shocks. While most good quality tapes are equipped with unbreakable ABS housing, some parts are susceptible to damage and can get scratched, adversely affecting the appearance, accuracy and smooth retraction of the Tape Measure. Handle your Measuring Tape with care and store it in a safe place, to preserve the integrity of its components.
During transportation and when not in use, your Measuring Tape should be placed in its original packing or in a waterproof bag. Ensure to always store your tape in a cool and dry environment. Excessive heat can shorten the life of steel and fibreglass tapes. Always store in cool and dry places, preferably in ambient temperatures of less than 35° Celsius.
Check your tape blade regularly for worn markings, bends and tears. These could cause inaccurate measurements as well as risk your safety.
